AllMusic gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars. Chris Connelly wrote for Rolling Stone: "Without exaggeration, may stand as the worst album ever recorded." The New York Times dubbed it "the worst rock album ever made." The Shaggs themselves were appalled at the record. The album received wider release in 1980 when it gained attention (much of it ironically positive) for being " so bad, it's good".
